At RCC, community engagement isn’t just a buzzword – it’s a heartfelt commitment that permeates the company culture. Among the various individual and company initiatives RCC employees are involved with, the Meals on Wheels program stands out as a wonderful example of dedication and compassion.
More than just meals
During the months of May and November, a team of about ten enthusiastic RCC employees selflessly dedicate time out of their workdays to deliver hot, nutritious meals and companionship to older adults in Bird Island and the surrounding area. The Meals on Wheels initiative for Bird Island, headed up by Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota, is more than a food delivery service; it’s a lifeline for many individuals, ensuring they receive not just a nourishing meal but also a friendly visit and a safety check. For the elderly and disabled recipients, these deliveries aren’t just about sustenance; they’re about human connection and the assurance that someone cares.

The routine involves picking up the freshly prepared meals from Pete’s Grill in Hector, comprised of a full-course lunch – a hot entrée, sides, bread, dessert, and milk. They deliver meals to approximately 5-10 households in the Bird Island area, pick up any containers that need to be returned and head back.
Going above and beyond
Beyond the delivery of meals, RCC volunteers go the extra mile to make a positive impact. They forge connections with the recipients, becoming familiar faces and often the highlight of their day. Some recipients may rarely have visitors, making the brief interactions with RCC volunteers a source of genuine joy and companionship.
Moreover, RCC employees exhibit a remarkable willingness to assist beyond the meal deliveries. Whether it’s aiding someone with limited mobility by opening containers or delivering mail along the route, their acts of kindness transcend the standard responsibilities, showcasing a genuine concern for the well-being of those they serve.
Their thoughtfulness extends to commemorating special occasions. For instance, celebrating a recipient’s birthday with a heartfelt gesture – a signed card, an RCC blanket, and essentials like Chapstick – illustrates the personal touch and warmth they infuse into their volunteer work.
Making a tangible difference
The Meals on Wheels program has been in the Bird Island area since at least the 1970’s, evolving from serving meals at Bird Island’s City Hall to the current delivery system through Pete’s Grill in Hector. RCC’s involvement in the program shines a light on the power of individuals coming together to uplift and support their community. Their unwavering support significantly contributes to the overall well-being of the elderly and disabled residents, ensuring they receive not only nourishing meals but also a sense of connection and care.
As Meals on Wheels America delivers millions of meals annually, RCC’s participation reflects a broader movement of compassion and community support. Through their consistent efforts, RCC employees embody the spirit of giving back, making a tangible and heartwarming difference in the lives of those they serve.
