For years, Susie Sheehan-Peterson, former CEO of Rural Computer Consultants, Inc., contributed to the Verbatim column in Butane-Propane News. The column offers industry leaders the opportunity to share personal reflections and perspectives, giving readers a glimpse into the people behind the businesses.
Susie’s contributions were thoughtful, genuine, and rooted in her deep connection to the propane community. Through her words, readers came to know not just a CEO, but a leader who cared deeply about the industry and the relationships within it.
Today, that tradition continues.
Abby Thurston, Susie’s daughter and now second-generation co-owner of RCC, has taken on the role of contributing to Verbatim. Abby’s participation represents continuity, leadership, and RCC’s ongoing presence in the industry conversation.
Honoring a Legacy
When asked what it means to continue something her mom was part of for so many years, Abby shared that the opportunity came with both pride and humility.
“It was an honor to be asked to continue the Verbatim column. If I’m being honest, initially there was some self-inflicted pressure and self-doubt that I could do it nearly as well as my mom. The first few replies I showed to a few co-workers for their input. Getting their input and validation helped me gain the confidence that I could handle it!”
Her honesty reflects something many leaders experience but rarely say out loud. Stepping into a legacy role carries weight. It also creates space for growth. With the encouragement of her team, Abby found her footing and her own voice within the column.
The Power of Perspective
The beauty of the Verbatim column is its simplicity. Contributors respond to general questions that invite reflection and
personal insight. The result is a collection of voices that remind readers there are real people behind industry titles.
When asked what she hopes readers take away from her contributions, she shared: “I always hope that readers have a moment to read all the different perspectives whether they agree or disagree. For myself, it reminds me that we’re all human regardless of our job title. I appreciate that this column brings that element into the magazine.”
That belief is reflected clearly in her own responses. In a recent column addressing how her definition of success has changed over time, Abby offered a perspective that resonated with many:
“Success to me is setting my mind to something and seeing it through. Over time, my definition of success has evolved. On some days, success is staying calm with my teenage kid. On other days, it might involve tackling a larger project that takes multiple days to complete. And then there are those particularly challenging days where success might simply be folding laundry.”
She concluded with a reminder that feels especially meaningful in leadership.
“The key, I believe, is not to be too hard on ourselves. We’re all human, trying our best, and some days’ best might look a little different.”
That perspective captures exactly what makes the Verbatim column so impactful. It allows industry leaders to show up not just as executives or business owners, but as parents, teammates, and people navigating the same everyday challenges as their readers.
Conversation and Connection
For Abby, the impact of the column has extended beyond the pages of the magazine. It has sparked meaningful
conversations within RCC itself.
“The best part I’ve experienced is hearing some of my co-workers’ replies after they read my answer. Often, it’s something new they learn about me or I learn about them. It’s been a fun conversation starter!”
Those moments reflect the culture that has long defined RCC. We believe in collaboration, shared learning, and staying connected, both within our company and across the industry.
RCC in the Industry
At RCC, involvement in the propane and fuel industry has always extended beyond software solutions. We believe in participating, supporting, and contributing wherever we can. From seminars and training to association involvement and publications, our commitment runs deep.
The Verbatim column is one more example of that engagement. It reinforces that RCC is not only a technology partner, but also an active voice within the industry we serve.
As a second-generation leader, Abby represents both heritage and forward momentum. She understands the foundation RCC was built on and is equally focused on where we are headed. Her presence in BPN News reflects the same principle that has guided RCC for decades.
For Fuel People, By Fuel People.
As Abby continues to share her perspective in Verbatim, we are proud to see that legacy carry forward.
